English
Intent
At Watling Meadows Primary School, our English curriculum aims to ensure that every child becomes a confident reader, expressive writer and articulate speaker. We place inclusion at the heart of our provision, ensuring access to high‑quality texts, rich vocabulary and engaging oracy opportunities for all learners. Grounded in our curriculum drivers—Excite, Experience, Expertise, Extend and Excel—we empower pupils to see themselves as capable communicators who can share their ideas confidently, creatively and respectfully.
Implementation
We deliver a sequenced curriculum that prioritises systematic phonics, vocabulary development and purposeful writing. Reading is taught through a blend of whole-class and targeted interventions, ensuring equity of access. Teachers model high‑quality writing and provide scaffolded support so that all pupils can achieve success. Inclusive practice is central, with adaptive teaching that responds to individuals’ needs, interests and backgrounds.
Impact
Pupils develop a love of reading, confidence in speaking and clarity in writing. Over time, they build a secure body of knowledge, apply skills independently and communicate effectively in different contexts. They leave Watling Meadows as articulate, reflective learners, well prepared for the linguistic demands of Key Stage 3 and beyond.
