Outdoor Learning at Watling Meadows Primary School
At Watling Meadows, outdoor learning is an integral part of our curriculum. We believe that children learn best when they are active, engaged, and connected to the world around them. Our outdoor learning offer — including Forest School, Wild Passport, and a wide range of curriculum‑linked outdoor activities — ensures that every child experiences the joy, freedom and inspiration that nature provides.
Forest School at Watling Meadows
Our Forest School sessions give children the opportunity to explore, create, investigate and collaborate in a woodland‑inspired environment. Led by trained practitioners, Forest School supports children to:
- Build resilience and confidence
- Develop problem‑solving and teamwork skills
- Connect with nature and understand the changing seasons
- Take supported risks in a safe, structured way
- Express themselves creatively and imaginatively
Forest School encourages children to become independent thinkers who can reflect, adapt and persevere.
Wild Passport Adventures
We also use Wild Passport, a skills‑based outdoor learning programme that allows children to progress through five levels of outdoor challenges and experiences. Through hands‑on activities such as tool use, shelter building, navigation, outdoor cooking and environmental care, pupils:
- Learn practical, real‑life skills
- Develop responsibility and self‑management
- Gain a sense of achievement as they work through each stage
- Build confidence through mastery and challenge
Wild Passport complements our wider curriculum and helps pupils develop essential life skills while nurturing respect for the natural world.
The Benefits of Outdoor Learning
Outdoor learning plays a vital role in supporting children’s wellbeing, development and academic success. At Watling Meadows, learning outside the classroom helps children to:
Support Mental Health & Emotional Wellbeing
Spending time outdoors reduces stress, anxiety and emotional overload. Natural spaces offer calmness and sensory regulation, helping children feel grounded and secure.
Develop Self‑Regulation Skills
Activities such as den building, teamwork tasks, mindful exploration, and physical play help children to manage emotions, build patience, and develop strategies to stay focused and calm.
Appeal to Different Learning Styles
Outdoor learning brings our curriculum to life for all learners, including those who thrive through:
- Hands‑on learning
- Movement and physical activity
- Visual and sensory experiences
- Social collaboration
- Problem‑solving and exploration
Whether observing mini‑beasts, conducting outdoor science investigations, creating natural art, or practising teamwork skills, each child can shine in an environment that suits their learning style.

Our outdoor learning offer connects closely to the Watling Meadows Pledge, ensuring children experience:
- Adventure
- Creativity
- Leadership

- A deep connection to nature
These experiences enrich their time at school and contribute to building confident, curious and resilient young people.
